Rubber expansion joints and solutions searched for as PTFE expansion joints both absorb pipeline movement and reduce loads on adjacent equipment. They are not interchangeable based on DN alone. Selection must combine medium and concentration, continuous and peak temperature, pressure, movement direction, flange standard and installation conditions.

Rubber or a chemically resistant execution?

A rubber expansion joint uses a compound selected for the process medium. Metal-Gum materials include EPDM, NBR, IIR, NR and CR. Rubber construction is particularly useful where vibration and noise isolation are important.

For aggressive chemicals, the technical team may select a chemically resistant barrier and a rubber-PTFE or multi-convolution execution. “PTFE expansion joints” is also a search and category phrase; the exact product name and construction should always follow the current Metal-Gum datasheet.

Data required for material selection

  1. Medium — chemical and trade name, composition and concentration.
  2. Temperature — continuous, peak and cleaning-cycle values.
  3. Pressure — operating pressure, PN, vacuum and possible surges.
  4. Movement — axial, lateral and angular values; see the movement guide.
  5. Connections — DN, flange standard, flange material and available installation space.

Key selection differences

  • Rubber execution — compound compatibility, vibration isolation and combined pipe movement are central.
  • Chemically resistant execution — the wetted layer must be checked against concentration, temperature and cleaning media.
  • Multi-convolution construction — affects movement capability but does not by itself determine chemical resistance.
  • DN, PN and temperature — must be confirmed for the complete execution; do not transfer limits from one product family to another.

Common mistakes

  • Selecting by DN without checking medium, pressure and movement.
  • Providing a chemical name without concentration or peak temperature.
  • Treating a maximum material temperature as valid for every pressure and construction.
  • Confusing material terms with geometry such as multi-convolution.
  • Omitting cleaning media and external exposure from the enquiry.

Can a rubber expansion joint handle a chemical medium?

It may, provided that the selected compound is compatible with the exact medium, concentration and temperature. Submit full process data for confirmation.

Are “PTFE” and “rubber-PTFE” interchangeable product names?

No. The precise product name and construction must follow the current datasheet. “PTFE expansion joints” may also be used as a category and search phrase.
