Reinforced hoses vs standard hoses — differences and industrial applications

Learn how a hose with a steel spiral and textile reinforcement differs from a hose without confirmed reinforcement and what data is required for selection.

On the Metal-Gum website, “reinforced hoses” refers to an execution with a steel spiral and textile reinforcement layers. Compared with a hose whose reinforcement has not been confirmed, the key difference concerns suction service: the spiral protects the hose against collapse, flattening and kinking. The rubber compound and operating parameters must always be selected separately.

Reinforced hoses vs standard hoses — what can be compared?

The Polish content plan uses a phrase that literally means “reinforced pipes” for an article supporting the reinforced-hose range. Metal-Gum’s current English product page uses the term “reinforced hoses”. In this guide, both expressions lead to a comparison between a specific Metal-Gum execution and a hose whose properties must be checked in its own documentation.

Metal-Gum reinforced hoses are intended for suction and delivery connections and for compensating movement and vibration between equipment. The product page confirms a steel spiral that protects the hose against collapse, flattening and kinking. A hose without confirmed suitability for suction service should not be treated as an automatic substitute.

Spiral, textile layers and compound — elements assessed separately

Hose properties result from the complete construction. During selection, the functions of individual elements must be considered separately.

  • The rubber compound is selected for the medium. Metal-Gum’s current hose range specifies NR, EPDM and NBR.
  • The steel spiral protects the hose against collapse, flattening and kinking.
  • Textile reinforcement layers carry pressure loads.
  • Crimping and connections prepare the hose for installation. Metal-Gum offers cutting to length and terminations including flanges, couplings, threaded connections and quick couplings.

Reinforced hoses vs standard hoses — comparison criteria

Criterion Metal-Gum reinforced hoses Hose without confirmed reinforcement
Suction service The steel spiral protects against collapse, flattening and kinking. Suitability for suction service must be confirmed separately in the product documentation.
Carrying pressure loads Textile reinforcement layers carry pressure loads. Construction and allowable pressure depend on the specific product.
Published range DN25–400, PN6 / PN10 / PN16, temperature from −20 °C to +80 °C. The range must be read from the relevant product data.
Preparation for installation Cutting to length, factory crimping and connections supplied as a set. The termination and preparation method depend on the selected product.

What does reinforcement alone not confirm?

The presence of a spiral is not a complete hose specification. Metal-Gum selects the rubber compound separately for the medium, so the term “reinforced” does not confirm chemical compatibility.

Likewise, temperature or pressure limits must not be inferred from the presence of the spiral alone. The published DN25–400, PN6 / PN10 / PN16 and −20 °C to +80 °C range applies to the complete product. The execution-selection table on the manufacturer’s website is indicative, and the final configuration is confirmed by the technical team after analysing the operating conditions.

Common comparison mistakes

  • selecting by diameter alone without checking suction and delivery service;
  • treating the term “reinforced” as confirmation of compatibility with every medium;
  • transferring a DN, PN or temperature range from another product;
  • omitting crimping, connection type and available installation length;
  • treating an indicative compound table as a completed technical selection;
  • comparing trade names without checking the documentation of both products.

Frequently asked questions

Is a reinforced hose always better than a standard hose?

No. The Metal-Gum product page confirms specific advantages of the steel-spiral execution, particularly protection during suction service. This does not mean that the product replaces every other hose. A comparison requires checking the medium, pressure, temperature, service mode, terminations and the documentation of the other product.

Does reinforcement increase resistance to the medium?

Reinforcement alone does not confirm this. Metal-Gum selects the rubber compound separately for the medium and specifies NR, EPDM and NBR for its hoses. The steel spiral protects against collapse, flattening and kinking. Compatibility with the medium and mechanical properties must therefore be verified separately.

How do the terms “reinforced pipe” and “reinforced hose” differ?

The Polish article plan uses a phrase that literally means “reinforced pipes”, while Metal-Gum’s current English product page uses “reinforced hoses”. In an enquiry, it is best to use the manufacturer’s product name and describe the required service mode, medium and installation parameters. This prevents the phrase alone from being treated as a complete specification.

Prepare the selection data

The confirmed range, construction and available terminations are listed on the Reinforced hoses product page.

Before selecting a specific execution, provide the Metal-Gum technical team with the medium, pressure, temperature, suction or delivery service, required length and hose terminations.

If the installation operates outside the published range or combines several demanding factors, a separate guide discusses flexible reinforced hoses in demanding installation conditions and the complete data required for a technical enquiry.
